Right Whale – Bay of Fundy Research Coordination Meeting

The Canadian North Atlantic right whale research coordination meeting is held annually at the St. Andrews Biological Station.

General Objectives:
  • Summarize research plans for right whale research in Canadian waters for the upcoming field season.
  • Explore opportunities to coordinate research activities, particularly in the Bay of Fundy.
  • All participants present short outlines of plans for the upcoming season, including short project descriptions, dates of field work, and vessel(s) used.
  • Profile a few right whale projects in detail, to improve awareness and understanding.
  • Allow an opportunity to discuss strategic research issues.

  • Present right whale habitat models in the North Atlantic, and discuss the implications for migratory patterns. (World Wildlife Fund)
  • Discuss what research is needed to address knowledge gaps. (New England Aquarium)
  • Discussion - Research issues of relevance to the right whale Recovery Strategy: (a) offshore whales? (b) recovery targets?
  • Discussion - Coordination of field activities, research collaboration, and funding issues for 2004.
  • Discuss NOAA right whale grant monies. (NOAA Protected Resource Division)
  • Discuss the response to entanglements and mortality; plans for 2004. (Campobello Whale Disentanglement Team)

  • Present results from alarm signal experiments. (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute)
  • Discuss measures to reduce the risk of ship collisions with right whales on Roseway Basin. (New England Aquarium)
  • Discussion - Quantifying search effort.
  • Discussion - Scientific research permits, licencing.
  • Discuss the response to entanglements and mortality; plans for 2003. (Campobello Whale Disentanglement Team)
