Field of Study: Microwave Remote Sensing

Dr. Irene Rubinstein studied physics at the University of Lodz, Poland and then at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, USA. She obtained her PhD from York University, CRESS (Centre for Research in Experimental Space Science) in microwave remote sensing.

She has been a member of advisory groups for the Canada Centre for the Remote Sensing (CCRS) and Environmental monitoring theme, for the Niagara Community College on GIS and Remote Sensing Curriculum and is an adjunct member of faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, York University as well as the Department of Engineering, University of Guelph. She has supervised more than a dozen graduate students. She has organised numerous workshops on remote sensing covering monitoring of snow cover parameters, cloud properties, precipitation, and other parameters relevant to hydrological applications.

Irene is a project leader and manager of research and industrial applications of microwave remote sensing for earth observations. In particular she has led projects on the remote sensing of sea ice cover, participated in retrieval algorithm validation and navigational support for the following campaigns: LIMEX'89, Polarstern Antarctic and Arctic cruises, 1988 -1990; SIMMS'90, RV Palmer (in collaboration with Columbia University); Calibration and validation of optical/microwave satellite data, 1994-1998.

She has contributed to the planning and carrying out of field campaigns for: L-band radiometer performance evaluation as part of multi-sensor remote sensing of soil moisture experiments (1994-1999); Earth Observation data use for the monitoring and modeling of hydrological processes (1999-2002); Remote sensing data assimilation into fire index forecast models (CRESTech, GEOIDE, ULERN, Canadian Forestry Research Institute, and FedNor collaborative project.)

Participation in other research campaigns includes BOREAS'94 (International); Aircraft Icing Research (International), Winter 1999/2000; Assimilation of Remote Sensing into Hydrological Forecast Models, Northern and Southern Ontario study areas, 1998- ongoing.

Irene has been active in numerous outreach programs including the Summer 2000 Peel region water festival; Volunteers-on-line, for the (ACER) Association for Canadian Educational Resources; planning remote sensing modules (integration of in-situ observations and satellite imagery) for ACER; and for the Big Rideau Lake Association: Environmental Education Centre displays and community use of Earth Observation data.

Dr. Irene Rubinstein is a member of the Canadian Geophysical Union, the American Geophysical Union and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic society, the Alliance for Marine Remote Sensing. She has collaborated with a wide range of academic, federal and provincial governments and commercial groups including the Canadian Meteorological Centre at Dorval, Quebec; University of Calgary; University of Quebec; Canada Centre for Remote Sensing; Harvard University; University of Colorado; University of Guelph; Royal Military College; Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources; Canadian Forestry Research Institute; H. Schroeder and Associates; Flashback technologies; and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (USA), Remote sensing division.

Dr. Rubinstein has published more than a hundred publications including referred journal articles and conference proceeding, book chapters, technical reports, abstracts and workshop presentations.

When not working Irene enjoys relaxing at the family cottage in "cottage-country", northern Ontario.
