The volume, freshwater, and heat fluxes that pass through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) have been monitored with an annually deployed/recovered mooring array in eastern Barrow Strait since August 1998. Because of the Strait's proximity to the magnetic north pole, ice cover with keels up to 25 m deep, and freshwater content restricted to the surface layer, new mooring technology had to be developed: a surface layer profiler for mobile ice covered regions (Watson compass; streamline float; and Icycler). Observations have shown that the fluxes vary a great deal both seasonally and inter-annually and that their long-term variability is caused by the distant wind forcing in the Beaufort Sea. Numerical modellers have used the data to validate model accuracy.
