The atmospheric ice beacon was built by Metocean Data Systems Ltd. of Dartmouth, N. S. It was equipped with an R. M. Young anemometer that collected hourly wind speed and direction, air temperature, and air pressure at 2 m above the ice surface. It contained an ARGOS transmitter that transmitted the last six, hourly atmospheric data to the Service ARGOS satellites. A miniature atmospheric ice beacon was built in-house at BIO and is able to measure wind velocity near the ice/ocean interface. Its tower was designed to measure wind speed up to 6 m height and to provide wind profiles for calibration of wind drag coefficient.
