Oceanographers use measurements of temperature and velocity microstructure to infer rates of vertical diffusion of heat and mass in the ocean. These rates are important to our understanding of mixing in the ocean, including local questions such as nutrient regeneration in regions of biological productivity, and to questions related to large-scale circulation.
