Research Interests:

My main research interest is in ecosystem and biogeochemical modelling, focused on the planktonic ecosystems that reside in the surface layer of the ocean. A continuing theme in my research since the late 1980s is the application and development of inverse modelling techniques to recover complete descriptions of the energy and material flows among ecosystem compartments from incomplete observations.

Since the mid-1990s I have also been involved in modelling climate-plankton interactions, examining both the impact of plankton on the climate system (through absorption of CO2 and production of DMS) and the impact of climate on the plankton. Although much of my work has focused on open ocean systems (e.g. Labrador Sea), I also work in shelf (e.g. Scotian shelf), inland seas (e.g. Gulf of St. Lawrence) and inshore areas (Lunenburg Bay).
