The current statistics provided include monthly maximum observed current
speed (without regard to direction), magnitude and direction of the mean
current and the variability as defined by the principal axis
components. The variability is reported for both the observed data (denoted as High Frequency) and the data with tides
removed (Low Frequency). The principal axis analysis determines
the orientation of the maximum and minimum variance and is a measure
of the variability of the current. A month must have at least 5 days
of data to be included in the statistics.
The
data are provided in two files. The first file describes the mooring
location, time period, instrument type and other associated meta-data.
The second file contains the monthly statistics. The two files are
related by the event specification (event_spec). The files are
provided as both an Excel spreadsheet and as comma separated variables
(csv) for import into other software packages. The
complete times series for any location can be provided on our ftp
server upon request by
emailing us
with a list of required event_specs.
